- Abstract
- The star-like image in the center of this electronic photograph is the most distant quasar yet discovered. With a redshift of 4.73, it is estimated to have formed when the universe was only 7% of its present age. Thus, if the universe is 15 billion years old, the quasar is about 14 billion light-years away. This quasar was discovered using an electronic camera attached to the 200-inch Hale Telescope at the Palomar Observatory by Maarten Schmidt, James Gunn and Don Schneider.
