- This photograph of Millikan’s oil-drop apparatus was taken in Ryerson Laboratory at the University of Chicago during his series of oil-drop experiments by which he eventually measured the charge on the electron, e. This photo shows the same setup but is not identical to photo 1.26-1, which was published in Millikan’s book, The Electron, in 1917.
